Stranger, whoe’er thou art, securely rest, Affianced in my faith, a ready guest; Approach the dome, the social banquet share, And then the purpose of the soul declare.

2016-11-05-14-34-35Leaving America just before the elections felt a bit like Odysseus, one lone boat adrift from the fleet just as everything begins to crash and swell.

At first I felt small and alone, at the mercy of the great unknown; then I remembered, this is how I like it, this is where I belong. Good gravy I hope it doesn’t take me 10 years to find my way back home!

Already at every landing point, just as when I was in the US and Middle East visiting family and friends over these past months, I have been welcomed with warmth and generosity. To all of you who clothed, housed, fed, and love me, too many to list here, you have my enduring gratitude and the steps I take are yours as well.

Well, actually most of our map time was spent hunched over computers but who wants to see that?!

First upon returning to South America, a few days in Buenos Aires to consult with Joey Shonka; gather  route information, take a deep breath, and armor up. While my telling is often florid and maintaining a positive focus is the only way I see to get through the years ahead, make no mistake, this undertaking requires a warrior spirit.

Estefania, from her front porch

From there I flew to Esquel, Argentina where I was met by Estefania Chereguini and Maria. Estefania is a woman I had heard much about, as she pioneered the Huella Andina, along with her partner, Walter, back around 2008. She is also responsible for starting the domino effect of incredible women we interviewed for the Herstory series in our first season.

They were also a source of inspiration to expand how we share the HerStories. Last season our focus was writing about a few very exceptional women. This year we will also include snippets of wisdom from the multitude of men and women we meet along the way who lead us toward illumination using #HerStory on both our Instagram and FaceBook feeds. Please bear with us as we learn the ins and outs of the social media aspect of sharing this journey.

In Esquel, Neon and I rejoined forces and traveled by micro back to Futaleufu, Chile (where we passed through last summer) to celebrate the inauguration of Marcela’s art exhibit, Canción de árbol. It was a beautiful reunion of so many people who had defined our first season of trekking across Patagonia. We are delighted to learn that two of the women we met, Marcela and Ale, have joined forces and created a shop in Futaleufu where they sell the artisanal goods they create. You can check out their wares online on their Page, Raíces.

The whole crew, gathered together.

Truly the best way to support the empowered and independent women of the far reaches of the globe is to support their businesses and the education of their children.

From Futaleufu we returned to Bariloche, Argentina. This year’s launching point. Here, again, we were quickly enveloped by the friends and connections begun at the end of last season. Dylan and Cheri have gone to great lengths to help us realize our vision of paddling across the 554 km2 Lago Nahuel Huapi which reaches a maximum depth of 464m (+1500 ft deep).

Sometimes, when I have ideas. . .

Sam and Randy welcomed us into their home as we waited out a spring storm which brought rain, snow and, most hindering our plans, mighty winds. While we are itchy to go, this time allowed us to catch up with friends; consult with adventurous Stevie, who, next November launches her own horseback expedition across 1000 miles of Patagonia; to interview Carol Jones, a true Patagonian cowgirl and business-woman; and to complete a number of errands which would have otherwise fallen to the wayside.

We now feel more than ready to launch on this next segment of what we anticipate to be a year straight of walking.

It’s Talley Ho! time. The short rest was sweet, time to hit the trail…I’m with you both all the way. I love walking the trail (vicariously) with you.
    Have fun and be safe.

God bless you as you begin a year of adventure on the trail. It is great the way you encourage the women you meet to develop their own crafts and learn to market them. The Global Crafts organization may be a good organization for them to partner with. They specialize in mentoring and guiding the marketing of third world craftsman with Fair Trade principles.

Clifford, we do so appreciate your ongoing encouragment. Your comments and following along mean a great deal.
Interestingly, nowhere we have yet passed through seems or would be considered third world. In fact, prices down here are comensurate to US prices! With pressures to industrialized, folks are having to fight hard to sustain small businesses which celebrate traditional creation techniques, such as darning wool from their own sheep.
Truly the best way the international community can support one another is to buy local. The same as when you come down here to travel or visit, buy the homemade things in the small shops rather than the prefabricated, generic (albeit usually cheaper) things in large stores.

Excerpts from 'Going Home' by Thich Nhat Hanh:

When you practice the bell of mindfulness, you breathe in, and you listen deeply to the sound of the bell, and you say, "Listen, listen." Then you breathe out and you say, "This wonderful sound brings me back to my true home. Our true home is something we all want to go back to. Some of us feel we don't have a home.

Does a wave have a home? When a wave looks deeply into herself, she will realize the presence of all the other waves. When we are mindful, fully living each moment of our daily lives, we may realize that everyone and everything around us is our home.

Isn't it true that the air we breathe is our home, that the blue sky, the rivers, the mountains, the people around us, the trees, and the animals are our home?

A wave looking deeply into herself will see that she is made up of all the other waves and will no longer feel she is cut off from everything around her. She will be able to recognize that the other waves are also her home.

When you practice walking meditation, walk in such a way that you recognize your home, in the here and the now. See the trees as your home, the air as your home, the blue sky as your home, and the earth that you tread as your home. This can only be done in the here and the now.

Sometimes we have a feeling of alienation. We feel lonely and as if we are cut off from everything. We have been a wanderer and have tried hard but have never been able to reach our true home. However, we all have a home, and this is our practice, the practice of going home.

When we say, "Home sweet home," where is it? When we practice looking deeply, we realize that our home is everywhere. We have to be able to see that the trees are our home and the blue sky is our home. It looks like a difficult practice, but it's really easy. You only need to stop being a wanderer in order to be at home. "Listen, listen. This wonderful sound brings me back to my true home."

What is the home of a wave? The home of the wave is all the other waves, and the home of the wave is water.

Faith Evolving On these new moon nights, I warm m Faith Evolving

On these new moon nights, I warm my heart thinking through matters of gratitude since the last full moon. Approaching Solstice, may we do the same with the revolution of the year; ReflecT, while those of us in the northern hemisphere are wrapped in darkness. Shine, for those in the southern.

A few of my dark & lights:

Best laid plans going horribly awry, sitting still with the fear and hurt, trusting my gut to lead the way through uncertainty to unexpected delights and the sort of folk who nurture and reconstitute joy, hope, and spirit rather than prey on and drain it. Practicing boundaries with both.

-Cozy @farmtofeet socks just right for the season
-Holiday celebrations and getting to elf around on stage for kiddos
-New friends on fun jaunts
-Engaging with the health and wellbeing of my faithful body, having all I need within walking distance, collecting herbs for tea along the way
-Honoring Beings like mountain agave and rich books
-Y mucho más (Patreon Peeps, holiday missive coming out soon!)

May you be warm, may you be healthy, may you feel loved.
