Gear Talk: Fidgit’s Take

Haz clic aquí para leer en español

Written by: Fidgit

I am notoriously hard on gear. Both on the PCT and when we began thru-hiking Patagonia, I ripped the butt out of my pants within a week of beginning (note: there are consequences to glissading into a rock field). The kind of tears that even a decent dental floss sewing couldn’t fix.

Season 2 Gear Spread

Considering we live in our gear and are looking at walking for at least a year on this stretch, this makes us some of the most rigorous gear testers out there. I had a great ‘Live’ session on Facebook, talking through the contents of my pack, so I am going to orient this post to a few pieces which can withstand multiple seasons of our caliber of use:

Hyperlite Mountain Gear
We are proudly carrying their equipment and grateful for their gear contributions to this undertaking. The Dyneema® Composite Fabrics have held up to a lot of wear and tear, and their composition means we don’t need to carry the extra weight of pack covers! We confidently carry them forward.

The UltaMid 2 Person tent gives us a lot of space to call home. Sets up quickly and securely and is a low profile color which is important when stealth camping. Added bonus, setting it up with our trekking poles creates a divider down the middle of the tent which serves the same purpose as making a line of tape down the middle of the room when you shared a room as kids.

The 2400 Southwest Packs are versatile and resilient. The roll tops make it easy to adjust the capacity, whether for a 3 day or 9 day haul; the minimalist straps keep the load riding snug. We call the large outside pocket our “back porch” and use them to the max. I have also put less important items in it when checking luggage, and the elastic top-line kept everything in place. The pockets on the side are large enough to be able to extract and return water bottles without having to take the pack off.

We carry an array of their stuff sacks and roll top bags. This year we are extra excited to try out the new Stuff Packs as food bags on the trail and for grocery and laundry runs in town. It also serves as a great daypack for side adventures or as a carry-on.

Delorme InReach Explorer– This device is turning out to be one of the greatest additions to our ruck. Besides the major feature of our being able to send out an SOS in dire circumstances, it also gives peace of mind to many at home who follow along on the map as it creates a track of our movements, keeps us up to date of the weather, and enables to message with friends and family. The companion Earthmate App, at several points, was our best mapping tool.
Now that Delorme are joined up with Garmin, these folks are going places with those of us who go to the most remote of places.

Pocket knife– I have been carrying and using the same Juice S2 Leatherman Multitool ever since my aunt Jeannine gave it to me as a High School graduation gift. I have used it everywhere from Philmont to the glaciers of Alaska. I love the scissors and integrated P38. There are more screwdrivers on it than necessary but the plyer and wire cutter options come in handy.

OR Aspire Jacket– This has been an excellent shell. The hood straps tight and held together my last bits of sanity against the winds of Tierra del Fuego. The brim kept the rain from dripping onto my face. The pit zips are the most amazingly awesome thing as they go all the way down the sides. The material has held up to bushwhacking and drenchings alike. My one complaint is the zipper on the tiny pocket on the arm will work its way open over the course of a day.

A few notes on gear and companies I recently worked with to replace gear after this first season:

Sleeping Bag- The elastic strap in the top of my Feathered Friends Flicker Quilt broke early on during the first season. Big disappointment. I sent it back as soon as I was in the US along with their repair form. I got a phone call of confirmation and a few weeks later it was returned, fixed and clean.

Water Purification- I was really excited to have been gifted a Potable Aqua Pure Electrolytic Water Purifier before beginning the trek. This unit uses electrolysis to breaks NaCl molecules of brine (salt + water) into Chlorine and Peroxide.
Pros: I feel like a mad scientist watching it bubble and fizz away
Cons: The solution got into its own charging port (it also has an integrated solar charger) and corroded it, rendering it useless. [Fortunately, the water in Patagonia was clean and amazing.] This off season it took several efforts to contact them (eventually I got through to someone on their Facebook page who pointed me to the right person). I returned the unit. Then another volley of emails commenced about whether I had secured a warranty and various other inquiries to which I did not know the answer. Then I mentioned that I was going tell you guys all about it, and a new unit arrived in short order.

Solar Charger- My Goal Zero Nomad 7 shat the sack a few months in. I have no idea why or how, it just did. When we contacted them about replacing it, they first offered some possible repairs, but when those did not work, they accepted the unit back and have since replaced it with a refurbished unit. We’ll see how it holds up this year.

Excerpts from 'Going Home' by Thich Nhat Hanh:

When you practice the bell of mindfulness, you breathe in, and you listen deeply to the sound of the bell, and you say, "Listen, listen." Then you breathe out and you say, "This wonderful sound brings me back to my true home. Our true home is something we all want to go back to. Some of us feel we don't have a home.

Does a wave have a home? When a wave looks deeply into herself, she will realize the presence of all the other waves. When we are mindful, fully living each moment of our daily lives, we may realize that everyone and everything around us is our home.

Isn't it true that the air we breathe is our home, that the blue sky, the rivers, the mountains, the people around us, the trees, and the animals are our home?

A wave looking deeply into herself will see that she is made up of all the other waves and will no longer feel she is cut off from everything around her. She will be able to recognize that the other waves are also her home.

When you practice walking meditation, walk in such a way that you recognize your home, in the here and the now. See the trees as your home, the air as your home, the blue sky as your home, and the earth that you tread as your home. This can only be done in the here and the now.

Sometimes we have a feeling of alienation. We feel lonely and as if we are cut off from everything. We have been a wanderer and have tried hard but have never been able to reach our true home. However, we all have a home, and this is our practice, the practice of going home.

When we say, "Home sweet home," where is it? When we practice looking deeply, we realize that our home is everywhere. We have to be able to see that the trees are our home and the blue sky is our home. It looks like a difficult practice, but it's really easy. You only need to stop being a wanderer in order to be at home. "Listen, listen. This wonderful sound brings me back to my true home."

What is the home of a wave? The home of the wave is all the other waves, and the home of the wave is water.

Faith Evolving On these new moon nights, I warm m Faith Evolving

On these new moon nights, I warm my heart thinking through matters of gratitude since the last full moon. Approaching Solstice, may we do the same with the revolution of the year; ReflecT, while those of us in the northern hemisphere are wrapped in darkness. Shine, for those in the southern.

A few of my dark & lights:

Best laid plans going horribly awry, sitting still with the fear and hurt, trusting my gut to lead the way through uncertainty to unexpected delights and the sort of folk who nurture and reconstitute joy, hope, and spirit rather than prey on and drain it. Practicing boundaries with both.

-Cozy @farmtofeet socks just right for the season
-Holiday celebrations and getting to elf around on stage for kiddos
-New friends on fun jaunts
-Engaging with the health and wellbeing of my faithful body, having all I need within walking distance, collecting herbs for tea along the way
-Honoring Beings like mountain agave and rich books
-Y mucho más (Patreon Peeps, holiday missive coming out soon!)

May you be warm, may you be healthy, may you feel loved.
