Scars of Our Mothers

Haz clic aqui para leer en espanol

“I am sure that if the mothers of various nations could meet,
there would be no more wars.”
~E.M. Forster Howards End

In Spanish when a mother gives birth, ella da luz. This directly translates as “she gives light.”

Cria translates as “create” but they refer to a mother and her offspring as madre y cria. Also a mother cria su hijos. Raises her children. One word encapsulates the breadth of the task.

Mothering is not about any single act, nor defined by the blood that runs in our veins. As my own mother said, “we birth many things, it’s a spirit thing. The essence of who we are.”

A defining act of mothering is stepping out of the center of her own life, to willingly abdicate that space. It is to take the heart from your bosom and tenderly set it beating in the chest of another. In this way, regardless of reproduction, we all have the scope to mother.

My grandmother, Patricia’s, final feat before drifting from this earth was to deliver my mother into it [Auntie M tells the story beautifully]. My mother was adopted by her uncle and aunt and so Masude-san became her mother. Her grandmother mothered her. Barb mothered her.

Then, one by one, they departed. I watched and ached as each loss wracked my mother.  Just as each of them had given their heart to her, so she had given hers to us. Just like each of them, she tried to protect us from the pain. To hide the scars.

A whole heart will not tolerate such segregation.
El dolor de amor tiene valor.
Mothers, you cannot protect your cria from any aspect of being a whole human. Joy and grief are both exquisite.

As my scars are my mother’s, so hers are mine. We know and love more deeply for this. Mourning alongside, through, and for her was how I learned our capacity for love and loss are infinite.

To all the mothers and nurturers; recognized, over To all the mothers and nurturers; recognized, overlooked, and missed,
🌲 HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY💐

#findingthemothertree

". . . we know Mother Trees can truly nurture their offspring. Douglas firs, it turns out, recognize their kin and distinguish them from other families and different species. They communicate and send carbon, the building block of life, not just to the mycorrhizas of their kin but to other members of the community. To help keep it whole. They appear to relate to their offspring as do mothers passing their best recipes to their daughters. Conveying their life energy, their wisdom, to carry life forward."

-From the book 'Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest'

I will always treasure hiking into Machu Picchu with my mom in 2017. 💚
